“The Boston Songwriting Competition”
 Rules and Regulations.

The contest is now open but hurry; All entries must be post marked on or before Dec. 7th, 2009 when the contest will close.

*Note: Quality of recordings or proffessionally produced songs are not considered during the judging of this contest, songs will be judged based on melody, composition, talent & lyrics (where applicable).

  • 1. All songs submitted must be contestant's original work. Songs may not exceed five (5) minutes in length. Please designate one name only on the application. Contestant may submit as many songs in as many categories as he/she wishes, but each entry requires a separate entry form, lyric sheet, and entrance fee. One check or money order for multiple entries/categories is permitted. Songs may be submitted on CD, Cassette, or MP3 files. (Entrance fee is non-refundable. NEC is not responsible for late, lost, damaged, misdirected, postage due, stolen, or misappropriated entries).
  •  2. The NEC Songwriting Contest is a Limited Submission contest, limited to New England Residence Only, and we are accepting limited submissions in each category, increasing contestant’s chances of winning. There will be a 1st and 2nd place winner in each category and a final grand prize winner overall for the Best Song.

Prizes: Cash, Studio Demo Packages, Guitar Center gift packages, and an opening on stage appearance with a national recording artist.
Music Categories:  Americana / Alternative / Blues / Country / Folk / Funk /  Instrumental 

Jazz / Pop / R&B - Hip Hop / Rock / Singer Songwriter

  •   3. Contest is open to amateur and professional songwriters. Employees of NEC, their families, subsidiaries, and affiliates are not eligible.
  • 4. Judges: Winners will be chosen by a select panel of judges comprised of music industry professionals from: Sony Records, Arista Records, Atlantic Records, Live Nation & BMG.

Songs will be judged based on melody, composition, originality and lyrics (when applicable). The quality of performance and production will not be considered. Prizes will be awarded jointly to all authors of any song; division of prizes is responsibility of winners. Void where prohibited. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply. NEC reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value.

  •   5. Winners will be notified by mail and must sign and return an affidavit of eligibility/recording rights/publicity release within 14 days of notification date. The affidavit will state that winner’s song is original work and he/she holds all rights to song. Failure to sign and return such affidavit within 14 days or provision of false/inaccurate information therein will result in immediate disqualification and an alternate winner will be selected. Affidavits for winners under 18 years of age at time of award must be countersigned by parent or legal guardian. Entry constitutes permission to use winner’s names, likenesses, and voices for future advertising and publicity purposes without additional compensation. CDs, cassettes, and lyrics will not be returned.
  • 6. Winner Announcements: All winners of the NEC contest will be contacted via mail, email or phone. The winners will be announced on our website on Jan ( ) 2010.

Each entry requires the following elements:

  • One song five (5) minutes or less (mp3, CD or cassette)
  • A lyric sheet -- no lyrics necessary for instrumental compositions
  • A payment -- $25 per song or 3 songs for $50.
  • A completed application
